Interests: Novel surgical techniques in the treatment of endometrial and cervical cancers; Sentinel lymph node biopsy technique

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In this special issue we will focus on exploring new science and discoveries in the sentinel lymph node (SLN) technique for endometrial, cervix and vulvar cancers. As the approach increasingly finds its way into surgical practice, many new questions and challenges are observed by clinician researchers. While SLN biopsy for vulvar cancer is well established as the standard of care for surgical staging, innovations in technique continue to develop such as novel tracers and modifications or improvements in technique. This staging approach is becoming more broadly applied in endometrial cancers, yet controversies still exist, including the safety and accuracy of this technique in high grade cancers, the role for frozen section and completion lymphadenectomy in cases of positive SLNs, and techniques for education, understanding learning curve and evidence regarding wide-spread adoption. The accuracy and safety of the technique for cervical cancer treatment require further exploration, as does the feasibility of the technique when combined with open surgical procedures, fertility sparing and conservative surgical approaches. We also hope that this special issue brings readers information about how the introduction of SLN biopsy has impacted the prescription of adjuvant therapies, and patient-reported outcomes such as surgical morbidity, lymphedema and costs.
